Another thought about Treating the Site of Pain

If you have read many of my posts or attended one of my seminars, you know one of my favorite sayings comes from Karel Lewit, MD, "He who treats the site of pain is often lost."

Proper assessment must not only include a structural assessment but a functional assessment.  You may ask what the difference is.

A structural assessment involves looking at a particular anatomical structure to identify whether or not it is contributing to one's problem.  If it is, then the anatomical structure is addressed often times through some type of invasive procedure (i.e. surgery or injection).

A functional assessment still looks anatomically.  However, the difference is that the anatomy is assessed from a regional interdependent standpoint.  In other words, a functional assessment takes into account how one link in the body's chain affects another link.

There are two products on the market that I am aware of that help with this type of approach...

  1. Eric Cressey's and Mike Robertson's Assess and Correct Program
  2. Rick Kaselj's Muscle Imbalances - Assessment and Exercise Program - Brand New as of 8/14/12
Look into one or both of these programs to make your assessment skills more efficient.

Wishing you health and success,

Joe
